There’s a new product on the market that is getting a lot of attention right now–Irish Moss. This little species of red algae, also known as Chrondrus Crispus, grows on the rocky parts of the Atlantic Coast of Europe and North America. Its color can range from greenish-yellow to red, to almost a dark purple. This unique moss, packed full of iodine and sulfur, is the industrial source of carrageenan. Which you may know is used as a thickener and stabilizer in milk products like almond milk, yogurt, and ice cream.
I know, I know. You’re probably wondering how algae could benefit you. Well, now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dish on its benefits!
Irish Moss Aids in Digestion
Research is now showing irish moss could aid in digestion. It functions as a prebiotic, a bacteria to help feed those good guys (probiotics) in your gut. Once it gets into your digestive tract, it becomes mucilaginous. And that helps stool move through the digestive tract.

Irish Moss Enhances Host Immunity
The second benefit is host immunity. Research published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology indicates that red seaweed enhances host immunity. It also suppresses the expression of what’s called “virulence factors,” or molecules produced by bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

Irish Moss As an Iodine Source
The third main benefit comes from a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. This study found that iodine in Irish Sea Moss is high and bioavailable. Iodine rich foods support thyroid function, healthy metabolism, and brain health. Your thyroid, for instance, must have high enough iodine levels to make thyroxine. This is a key hormone that works to regulate important, everyday biochemical reactions.
How to Incorporate into Your Routine
Well, irish moss is most commonly used to thicken smoothies and helps them stay creamy. If you ask me, it’s the perfect little breakfast addition. An iodine-rich superfood that makes your smoothie even more delicious? I’m in!
